It’s a phenomenal natural formation of Basalt columns and caves. It is probably most photographed location with tourists climbing and posing trying to take best pictures possible. When we went there, we had a fairly cold weather so if it’s a cold day and you’re planning on getting there keep in mind it can be quite windy and cold.By Maxime ROBERT (a year ago)This is another one of those places where you get there after a long journey and wish you could spend more time absorbing the experience before being ripped away by your tour guide for the next locationThe sand was black, the weather cold, and the Atlantic was violent. Don’t go into the water or even near the waves.
It’s beautiful here and worth a trip to see it in person.

Our hotel was located just next to it. We went for a very early breakfast on the beach and evenings. We loved it. There is quite few people but you can easily get away and find a peaceful place. We saw hundreds of puffins flying to get their foods. We even manage to see a seal. Watch out for the waves, they are really tricky and they can catch you really fast ! There is a hidden cave if you pass the corner of the mountain. There are paid toilets on the parking. It’s absolutely stunning and a must visit! We went to one of the overlooks and saw the lighthouse as well. It was pretty windy that day so we didn’t actually go down to the beach.By Eve (2 months ago)This place has so much to offer, from horse riding ( need to book in advance ), puffins ( Aug or earlier in the year ), basalt columns and yes – black sand and stones. One of the most popular beaches and one we had wanted to visit during our short stay in Iceland. Parking was ok and found a space with no problems. The beach is impressive with its black sands and tall stone columns. It’s well known for the sneaker waves and a board near the car park tells of the dangers and the last tourist who died a couple of months before. This, however, does not dissuade visitors from going right up to the sea and running back when such a wave comes. And then people climbing up the tall stacks and sitting on them! We enjoyed our visit very much but just couldn’t fathom people’s stupidity considering how dangerous the waves can be.
Never seen a more beautiful looking beach then black sand beach. Parking is free . Be careful of sneaky waves. Be ready to run they are very unpredictable. Column looks amazing and unreal.
This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, God is good. Spend the day if you can, we went on a tour and we were only there 2 hours.
High waves, black sand, beautiful rock formations! Add all of this up and you have this amazing beach! I visited in the winter and saw almost no sand due to the snow but that didn’t let me down! Be REALLY careful of the waves and pay attention to the board at the entrance of the beach to learn about all the dangers! There’s an huge parking spot and a restaurant nearby for every need!
Amazing views, if you haven’t ever seen black sand before, that’s your place to go. It’s quite close to the town of Vik. Be careful of the waves though, they can be aggressive, so don’t get too close.
